A Red Sancerre From Gerard Millet

The domain of Gérard Millet is located in Sancerre, in the village of Bué. The Pinot Noir grapes for this wine are from a single vineyard there, Sur Le Clou. The iron-rich clay soil features very old vines, more than 30 years old, for this Loire Valley red wine. The clay is more suitable than the limestone that works so well for Sauvignon Blanc.

The Millet estate uses no insecticides, herbicides or anti-botrytis treatments in growing their grapes. Alcohol for this 2016 vintage is 14% abv and it sells for around $35.

This wine has a medium ruby color. The nose offers aromas of blackberry, plum, black currant, anise, and a hint of black tea. The palate is very smooth, and loaded with the dark fruit flavors. Tannins are quiet, and the finish is long and earthy. I would pair it with lamb, blackened salmon, or chicken salad.
