Years In The Making, Rioja Viura

Winemaking started in the region we now call Rioja in the eleventh century B.C., but it was only 101 years ago that Rioja was recognized as an official designation of origin. Spain's first.

The 2023 Bodega Bideona Cabezadas Viura is a white wine from the Rioja Alavesa region. It is a field blend, meaning the grapes were grown, harvested, and vinified as a group. About 95% of the grapes are Viura, with the remainder comprised of Garnacha Blanca, Malvasía Riojana, Cagazal, and Jaén varieties. The wine was fermented in a combination of stainless steel tanks, concrete vessels, and used oak barrels. The brief aging was done that way, too. Alcohol hits only 12% abv and the wine sells for $22.

In my early days with wine, I paired a Viura with a Triscuit and sharp white cheddar. I thought at the time that it was the best taste I had ever experienced. I still think of that bite often, and I still like to pair Spanish whites with Triscuit and cheese.

This wine is tinted pale yellow and appears quite clear in the glass. Aromas of white nectarine, minerals, and a floral aspect are present, but very faint. The palate brings a savory taste, full of minerality. Acidity is fresh, yet the mouthfeel is full.
